Amazon Drivers in Queens Align with Teamsters Amid Legislative Push
Amazon drivers at the DBK1 facility in Woodside, Queens are joining forces with Teamsters Local 804, amplifying the wave of unionization efforts targeting the e-commerce giant. These drivers are part of a broader movement demanding enhanced compensation, health benefits, and job stability.
Following the footsteps of numerous colleagues who joined the union last year, the DBK1 drivers are challenging Amazon's third-party "Delivery Service Partner" (DSP) model. This model has faced criticism for allowing Amazon to sidestep direct accountability and labor obligations.
Complementing these organizing efforts is the introduction of the Delivery Protection Act in New York City, which aims to dismantle captive subcontracting practices and mandate direct employment for delivery workers. The proposed legislation enjoys strong support from both the City Council and the mayor.
Randy Korgan, Director of the Teamsters Amazon Division, remarked, “Amazon created the DSP model to suppress workers’ rights and safety, including the right to form a union. But Amazon has no answer for worker power and Teamsters solidarity. The drivers at DBK1 are joining together as we gear up to pass the Delivery Protection Act, and they will be indispensable in getting this crucial legislation across the finish line.”
DBK1 driver LeAnn Rivera highlighted the growing apprehension within Amazon regarding the new legislation, stating, “My co-workers and I have seen how scared Amazon is of the Delivery Protection Act, and it made us realize that we only have power if we join a union. We are sick and tired of Amazon’s games. By joining the Teamsters, we have the power to take this company on. We can’t wait to join the fight.”
This organizational triumph is accompanied by the Teamsters Amazon National Negotiating Committee's (TANNC) efforts to extend picket lines at DBK1. They are calling on Amazon to cease unfair labor practices and initiate negotiations for a union contract with more than 10,000 organized Teamsters workers across the country.
Since its founding in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has represented over 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. More details can be found on their website. Stay updated by following them on X and on Facebook.
