UAW Urges No on Proposal 1, Yes on 2 to Curb Corporate Influence in MI

The UAW is actively participating in Michigan's political landscape this November by endorsing a variety of candidates and taking a stance on two significant ballot proposals. This effort is part of the union's initiative to revitalize its member-led political program statewide.

In a move to safeguard Michigan's constitution, the UAW is advocating for a No vote on Proposal 1. The union believes this measure is essential to protect recent gains in areas such as voting rights, equitable redistricting, and reproductive freedoms from being eroded by billionaire and corporate influences.

Concurrently, the UAW is urging union members to support Proposal 2 with a Yes vote. This proposal aims to restrict monopoly utility companies, exemplified by DTE Energy, from injecting substantial financial resources into Michigan's political arena.

UAW President Shawn Fain expressed strong support for Proposal 2 by stating, “Nothing has shaped the current corrupt state of our government like the rise of corporate money and influence.” He emphasized the detrimental impact of corporations and billionaires funneling billions of dollars into elections to skew the system to their advantage, to the detriment of working families. He added, “We’re done with a system that allows corporate greed to dictate our politics. That’s why the UAW endorses a Yes vote on Proposal 2, Michigan Money Out of Politics. This initiative would at least stop a monopoly utility company like DTE from owning elected officials in Lansing, so our elected officials are accountable to the people, not a corporate checkbook.”
