Contra Costa Nurses Ratify New Contract for Safety and Retention
Contra Costa County Nurses Secure New Contract to Enhance Safety and Retention
In a decisive move, registered nurses associated with Contra Costa County Health Services have overwhelmingly ratified a new contract, marking a significant step towards improved patient safety and nurse retention, as announced by the California Nurses Association (CNA).
“Nurses fought hard for 14 months to achieve a contract that is strong enough to recruit and retain nurses here in Contra Costa County’s safety net health system,” stated Danielle Lopez-Odell, RN, who serves in the medical surgical unit at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. “We’ve secured better working conditions, workplace violence protections, and protected the benefits that our nurses and our retirees depend on.”
Key Elements of the New Agreement
- Enhanced capabilities for union nurses to address workplace violence, harassment, and retaliation;
- Stability in jobs and working hours amidst the impacts of H.R. 1 cuts to Medi-Cal;
- Preservation of healthcare plans for over 400 active nurses and numerous retired county nurses;
- No reductions or takeaways.
According to Stefani Macagba, RN, a nurse in the emergency unit at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center, “Public sector nurses have dedicated our careers to caring for the most vulnerable residents of the county. This contract honors our expertise and gives nurses the stability we need to stay with the county through these turbulent times.”
The agreement will be in effect from September 2026 through November 2029, covering more than 1300 nurses represented by CNA at Contra Costa County Health Services.
The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United is the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the nation, with over 100,000 members across more than 200 facilities in California and more than 225,000 RNs nationwide.
