In a strategic move to revitalize naval construction and the domestic shipbuilding industry, President Donald Trump has introduced a new policy that allows foreign shipbuilders to invest and build ships in the United States. This initiative could significantly benefit South Korea's Hanwha Group, among others.
According to a presidential memorandum issued on Thursday, foreign shipbuilders who establish or acquire a shipyard in the U.S. can construct up to two vessels in their home country before transferring production to their U.S. facilities. This policy aims to leverage advanced foreign shipbuilding technology and capabilities to meet immediate needs while expanding the U.S.'s own production capacity in the long run.
South Korea’s Hanwha Group appears to be a major contender poised to gain from this initiative. The conglomerate acquired Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia in 2024, setting the stage for an American production hub. Hanwha has also unveiled a $5 billion plan to enhance the shipyard's infrastructure, with a vision to convert it into a technologically advanced smart shipyard.
A further proposal by Hanwha to acquire Austal USA, the American division of the Australian shipbuilding company Austal, is in the works. Austal USA is a key constructor of vessels for the U.S. Navy and other governmental entities, suggesting that if Hanwha succeeds in this acquisition, it could solidify its footprint in the American shipbuilding and defense sectors.
This strategic policy not only aims to bolster the U.S. naval capabilities but also encourages foreign investment in domestic shipyards, potentially transforming the landscape of the shipbuilding industry in the United States.
