UAW Convention: Nominations, Honors, and Resolutions on Day 3

UAW's 39th Constitutional Convention Advances with Key Nominations and Honors

The third day of the UAW's 39th Constitutional Convention was marked by significant nominations, discussions, and honors as attendees set the course for the union's future. Delegates took the opportunity to nominate candidates for the upcoming International Officer elections, revise definitions within the UAW Constitution regarding retirees, and elect a new International Trustee.

Throughout the day, there were comprehensive debates on numerous amendments and resolutions, vital in shaping the union's strategy for the next four years. As per the UAW Monitor’s Election Rules, candidates for the International Executive Board (IEB) must be vetted after accepting their nominations to officially run for office. The nominees today included:

UAW President: Rich Boyer, Shawn Fain, Tricia Geiger, Brian Keller, Will Lehman, and Greg Mooney.

UAW Secretary-Treasurer: Brandon Campbell, Roc Ciers, Margaret Mock.

UAW Vice President: Mike Booth, Laura Dickerson, Rachael Dickinson, Eric Fleming, Kevin Gotinsky, Ryan Hiestand, Kisha Richardson, Matt Slade, Tony Totty, Mike Turner, Robert Wright.

During the convention, Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP, took the stage to emphasize the necessity of the labor movement’s involvement in the political affairs of November. He stated, "In this moment, the concept of solidarity is more important now than ever… The fight we are in is not against each other. The fight we are in is for the future of this nation and for working men and women across this country."

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell also addressed the delegates, commending the UAW's bold actions and urging members to sustain their efforts. "The UAW has always been strongest when it’s been bold," Dingell asserted. "When it’s fought, not just for its own members, but for all working people."

A touching moment came as the UAW posthumously honored Rev. Jesse Jackson, a renowned civil and labor rights leader, with the union’s Social Justice Award. His son, U.S Congressman Jonathan Jackson, accepted the award, highlighting his father's vision. "In 1984 and again in 1988, my father traveled across this nation, building what he called the Rainbow Coalition," Jackson reflected. "He reminded autoworkers in Detroit that they had more in common with teachers in Atlanta, janitors in Los Angeles, farmworkers in California, and nurses in Chicago than they did with those who sought to divide us by race, region, religion, or background. He understood a simple truth: When working people stand together, America stands taller."

Additionally, Stacie Loveless, the Financial Secretary of UAW Local 838, was elected to serve as an International Trustee, embarking on a 12-year term.

The convention is set to conclude with its final day beginning at 9 am tomorrow.
