UAW's 39th Convention Concludes with Unified Vision and Key Initiatives

On the concluding day of the United Auto Workers' 39th Constitutional Convention, elected delegates finalized their business agenda, setting a more cohesive path for the union's next four years.

In key decisions, delegates decided on financial support for the Civil and Human Rights Department and the Women's Department. Additionally, a significant move was made to divest UAW investments from Israel bonds, among other resolutions.

Jocelyn Benson, a candidate endorsed by the UAW for Michigan Governor, and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, endorsed for the U.S. Senate, addressed the gathering as prominent speakers.

Benson emphasized her dedication to advocating for Michigan's working families upon her election in November. She remarked, “I love this state... I know we must do right by them,” citing particular challenges faced by citizens like single parents and seniors.

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed criticized the existing political framework that he argues has neglected many. “Donald Trump himself is not the disease in our politics,” El-Sayed stated. He identified the issue as systemic, involving powerful entities influencing governance to the detriment of ordinary citizens.

Maria Medina, from Local 1248, was awarded the union's Social Justice Award for her efforts in assisting Spanish-speaking members understand the UAW Constitution and their rights. Her contributions included a significant role in translating the UAW Constitution into Spanish for the first time.

“What started as helping loved ones became my life’s purpose,” Medina reflected on her journey of bridging language barriers.

The retiring UAW Region 1D Director, Steve Dawes, was honored for his extensive service to the union. In his acceptance, Dawes acknowledged the contribution of his delegation, attributing his achievements to their support.

As the convention concluded, participants celebrated Juneteenth and joined in singing “Solidarity Forever,” the trade union anthem. The 40th UAW Constitutional Convention is scheduled for June 2030.
