WASHINGTON, D.C. – In an inspiring show of charity and community support, this year's Labor of Love event organized by North America's Building Trades Unions (NABTU) achieved a milestone by raising over $1 million for the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). The record-breaking event took place in Atlantic City, gathering over 250 participants, including sponsors, signatory contractors, and union members, all dedicated to this noble cause.
"No one works harder to strengthen our communities than the men and women of the Building Trades. Labor of Love puts that commitment into action, showcasing our members’ deep dedication to giving back and supporting impactful causes," stated NABTU President Sean McGarvey. "Together with our partners, signatory contractors, sponsors, and affiliated unions, we're proud to raise the bar, deliver meaningful progress, and set a new fundraising record in the fight to cure Type 1 diabetes."
Michael Burton, CEO of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, expressed gratitude, saying, "We are deeply grateful to NABTU and everyone who made this year's Labor of Love event such a remarkable success. Surpassing $1 million raised is not only an extraordinary achievement—it represents critical momentum in advancing the transformational research that brings us closer to a cure."
This year's success adds to a longstanding partnership between NABTU and the DRI, which dates back over four decades. This collaboration includes significant support, such as assisting in the construction of the DRI facility in Florida and organizing yearly fundraising events. The cumulative donations from NABTU now exceed $80 million, underlining their role as the largest supporter of the institute's research efforts over the past 50 years.
