Las Vegas Casino Workers Secure Union Victory with Teamsters Local 986
In a significant move for labor rights within the hospitality industry, 130 front desk workers at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas have voted to join Teamsters Local 986, marking an important milestone for union representation on the Strip.
This latest development extends the Teamsters' influence at Mandalay Bay, where they already represent over 250 employees in various roles, including valet, horticulture, warehouse, and call center positions. The addition of front desk workers completes their comprehensive representation at the property.
Tommy Blitsch, Director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Show, and Casino Division, emphasized the impact of this triumph, stating, “We’re building power across the casino industry, and workers are stepping up because they know the Teamsters fight and deliver.” This victory is part of a broader trend where hospitality workers are increasingly advocating for respect, job security, and better prospects.
Front desk employees, who are crucial in managing operations and ensuring guest satisfaction, have united with the Teamsters in pursuit of improved wages, enhanced benefits, and greater workplace influence.
Tim Vera, President of Local 986, highlighted the essential role these workers play, saying, “Front desk workers are the face of the property and the heartbeat of the guest experience. These workers deserve strong representation and a contract that reflects the value they bring every single day. Local 986 is proud to welcome them into our family, and we’re ready to fight alongside them for the future they deserve.”
Sylvia Hinojosa, a Guest Front Services Representative and a new member of Local 986, voiced the collective sentiment, “We joined the Teamsters to win a fair contract and have a stronger voice on the job. Being a Teamster means having the representation, protections, and benefits we deserve, and I’m proud to stand with my co-workers in this fight.”
The Teamsters, a major union with a stronghold in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, represent close to 6,000 members across the nation's casinos and casino hotels.
