Illinois State University workers secure new contract, end 4-week strike
Illinois State University Workers Secure New Contract After Month-Long Strike
Loyal employees at Illinois State University have successfully concluded a four-week strike with the ratification of a favorable contract. The agreement, supported by a substantial majority of the over 300 employees represented by AFSCME Local 1110, brings significant improvements in pay and respect.
More than 95% of the union members voted in favor of the new contract, which includes an immediate wage increase of 3.5% and a one-time $1,500 payment. From July 1, 2026, annual raises of 3% will be implemented, amounting to a 16.5% compounded increase over the five-year duration of the agreement, set to expire on June 30, 2030.
The recent strike action was initiated after negotiations with ISU administration stalled. The administration had refused to offer a retroactive pay raise from last July and did not assure that union members would receive the same annual percentage increase as administrators.
The new contract’s lump-sum payment surpasses the value of a retroactive raise for most Local 1110 members, particularly benefiting lower-wage workers. Moreover, the contract reinstates a "me-too" provision from July 2028 onward.
Roberta Lynch, Executive Director of AFSCME Council 31 and AFSCME International vice president, criticized the university's approach: “The terms of this agreement were available to ISU management on February 10... Instead, management chose a path of conflict and division that brought hardship to workers, disruption to students and a stain on ISU’s name.”
Lynch praised the determination and unity of the ISU employees, stating, “In an inspiring display of courage and solidarity — and with the support of students, faculty, staff and alumni, members and leaders of other unions, elected officials and countless others — ISU employees stood up, stayed strong and prevailed.”
The resolution of this contract dispute highlights the power of collective action and the importance of fair labor practices in maintaining a supportive and respectful workplace environment.
