Florida's I-95 Interchange Project Speeds Ahead with Major Upgrades
Amid the flurry of Florida's infrastructure development, travelers along I-95 have reason to anticipate smoother journeys. A pivotal interchange in Ormond Beach, recognized as one of the state's oldest highway connections, is set for a much-needed overhaul.
Gov. Ron DeSantis, alongside the Florida Department of Transportation, initiated the groundbreaking for the I-95 and U.S. 1 interchange reconstruction on Thursday. Originally slated to start a year later, the project's timeline has been moved forward, thanks to streamlined construction processes.
The initiative, part of the Moving Florida Forward plan, was accelerated due to the state's advantageous fiscal strategies. “Florida is consistently ranked in the top five states with the highest-quality roadways, and the Moving Florida Forward Initiative ensures that Florida will continue to be a model of efficient and cost-effective infrastructure investment,” DeSantis remarked.

The project, which was fast-tracked by 15 to 20 years, will employ a Modified Phased Design-Build approach, enhancing existing methods to quicken construction, efficiently use resources, and reduce expenses. This method is expected to aid significantly in alleviating congestion and improving safety, as U.S. 1 is anticipated to see its traffic volume double over the next two decades.
FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue highlighted the economic impact, stating, “By reconstructing the I-95 interchange and increasing U.S. 1 capacity by 50%, this project is expected to have a $554 million regional economic impact in the Volusia County community.”
The proposed changes include adding three new bridges and redesigned loop ramps, which will improve the entry and exit routes for interstate drivers. Enhancements will allow drivers more time to adjust their speed, promoting safer navigation onto and off the highway.
Additionally, both off-ramps on I-95 will be widened, and a stretch of U.S. 1 will be expanded to six lanes. The redesigned interchange is intended not only to improve traffic flow but also to serve as a welcoming gateway to Ormond Beach, incorporating design elements that reflect the local community.
