Victory for AMPI Dairy Workers as They Secure Substantial Gains in First Contract
(PAYNESVILLE, Minn.) – In a significant win for labor rights, members of Teamsters Local 471 at AMPI Dairy in Paynesville, Minnesota, have successfully ratified their inaugural contract, following a determined strike advocating for fair wages, benefits, and job security.
According to Lyndon Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 471, "AMPI workers stood strong to win this strike and ratify their first contract. They secured significant wage increases and language that protects standards if the company is sold or changes ownership, as well as the ability to move into a Teamsters health insurance plan which will significantly reduce costs to members." Johnson highlighted that this victory ensures workers a formidable voice in their workplace.
The newly established three-year contract promises a 14 percent wage increase spread over its duration, includes retroactive pay from March 2025—when the bargaining unit was formally recognized—adds coverage under Teamsters health insurance, and introduces robust successorship provisions. These provisions are designed to safeguard workers' jobs and union rights in the event of a change in facility ownership.
Heidi Barg, an 18-year lab technician at AMPI Dairy, expressed her relief and satisfaction by stating, "After years without protections or a voice on the job, this contract changes everything. With fair pay, health care, and strong job protections, we finally have the security to plan for our future. We stood together, didn’t back down, and won big.”
Teamsters Local 471 is dedicated to serving workers across varied sectors in Minnesota, including dairy processing, warehousing, and distribution. To learn more about their initiatives and services, visit local471.com.
