Bill Targets Billionaire Wealth to Fund Working Class Investments
Bill Proposes Tax on Billionaire Wealth to Bolster Working Class Support
National Nurses United's statement on the Make Billionaires Pay Their Fair Share Act:
National Nurses United (NNU), the largest union of registered nurses in the United States, has thrown its support behind the Make Billionaires Pay Their Fair Share Act. Spearheaded by Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) and Rep. Ro Khanna (Calif.), the proposed legislation seeks to address what it describes as a deeply flawed tax system that enables the wealthy to amass significant riches while the working class struggles with basic needs like housing, food, and healthcare.
The union highlights the stark inequality in wealth distribution, pointing out that billionaires have historically paid much lower taxes than average workers. This issue, they argue, is the result of a sustained effort by wealthy individuals and corporations to manipulate governmental policies for their benefit, often at the expense of public services that support the working class. NNU has been vocal about its opposition to the Republican budget bill (H.R. 1), which they describe as the largest wealth transfer in history, and have criticized the cuts to Medicaid and other social safety programs, even holding protests against these cuts.
According to NNU, nurses encounter the consequences of societal disparities firsthand, as patients are often forced to choose between essential needs like food, housing, and healthcare. The union believes that the proposed bill can start to mend these societal fractures by implementing several measures:
- Broadening Medicare coverage to include dental, vision, and hearing services for seniors
- Reversing over $1 trillion in reductions to Medicaid and healthcare programs from H.R.1
- Issuing a $3,000 direct payment to each family member in households earning $150,000 or less
- Limiting childcare expenses to 7 percent of a family's income
- Investing in the rehabilitation and construction of affordable public housing
- Setting a $60,000 minimum annual salary for every public school teacher in the U.S.
- Enhancing Medicaid home healthcare services for seniors and individuals with disabilities
NNU commends Sen. Sanders and Rep. Khanna for their leadership, emphasizing that the policy agenda they propose supports working individuals and resists pressures from corporate entities and billionaires. They argue that Americans are disillusioned with existing conditions and urge Democrats to take a firm stand for the working class to retain power in Congress.
The union calls on Congress members to stop allowing billionaires to exploit the system and to support the Make Billionaires Pay Their Fair Share Act.
National Nurses United is the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the United States, representing over 225,000 members nationwide. Affiliates include the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, DC Nurses Association, Michigan Nurses Association, Minnesota Nurses Association, and New York State Nurses Association.
