Governor Initiates Training Program for Infrastructure Workers

Michigan's Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed Executive Directive 2024-1, initiating the training of 5,000 new infrastructure workers. The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) is tasked with ensuring that these workers receive industry-recognized credentials, certificates, or on-the-job training and find stable, well-paying jobs.

Investing in Michigan's Infrastructure

"We're upgrading Michigan's infrastructure, from roads and bridges to internet services," stated Governor Whitmer. "This directive will train 5,000 infrastructure workers, adding to the $10 billion we've received from the Biden-Harris administration for infrastructure enhancement, advanced manufacturing, and clean energy. These funds provide a fantastic opportunity to create high-paying, high-skill jobs for Michigan residents."

Creating a Diverse, Inclusive Workforce

LEO Director Susan Corbin echoed the sentiment, stating that the directive would "remove barriers and ensure equal access to career and education opportunities, helping Michigan build a diverse, inclusive future workforce."

Boosting the Construction Industry

Steve Claywell, President of the Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council, expressed excitement at the prospect of training more Michigan residents for "good-paying union jobs." He credited the Governor and the Biden-Harris administration for prioritizing infrastructure, leading to upgrades in roads, bridges, water systems, and more. These projects, he said, would pave the way for more Michiganders to join the middle class.

Workforce Readiness for Infrastructure Projects

Chong-Anna Canfora, Executive Director of the Michigan Workforce Development Institute, commended Governor Whitmer for making workforce development a key component of her statewide infrastructure plan. The emphasis on providing free access to apprenticeship-readiness training, especially for women and underrepresented groups, would "transform lives."

Preparing for Future Infrastructure Needs

Rob Coppersmith, Executive Vice President of the Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association, said the construction industry is ready to "build the infrastructure future generations will rely on." He welcomed the Governor's action to expand the construction workforce.
