UAW Rallies in Flint for Slotkin's Senate Bid, Kicks Off Major Campaign
FLINT — Earlier today, UAW workers and community members gathered in Flint to kick off canvassing efforts for U.S. Senate candidate Elissa Slotkin. With Michigan's key role in American manufacturing and the ongoing fight for quality union jobs, the event underscored the UAW’s endorsement of Slotkin and highlighted the extensive field program Michigan UAW members are implementing to support her campaign.
Speeches were delivered by UAW President Shawn Fain, UAW Region 1D Director Steve Dawes, and Rep. Slotkin herself.
This Flint rally is part of a wider electoral strategy by the UAW in Michigan. Across the state, union members are engaging in canvassing activities aimed at connecting with co-workers, retirees, and households affiliated with the UAW. These interactions focus on the significance of electing candidates who advocate for a pro-worker and anti-corporate greed agenda to ensure the future of manufacturing both in Michigan and nationwide.
“Rep. Slotkin has been a champion for autoworkers and union members in Michigan while her opponent has consistently voted to weaken workers’ rights. We need Rep. Slotkin to be Michigan’s next senator,” stated Steve Dawes, UAW Region 1D Director. “We also know that the path to the White House could run through Michigan. Vice President Kamala Harris has walked our picket lines, showing her support not only for labor but for all working-class people.”
In August, UAW embarked on its most ambitious political campaign in decades, aiming to elect Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States and to support other pro-worker candidates. The Union’s program includes mobilization efforts via online platforms, worksites, and a door-to-door campaign strategy to reach members, retirees, and their families.
The UAW's one million active and retired members will be a crucial support base for the Harris-Walz campaign, offering significant voter turnout in Michigan. In the 2020 election, the UAW membership made up 9.2% of the Biden-Harris votes in the state.
The Union’s strategy to achieve victory draws inspiration from the Stand Up strike and movement launched in 2023. By disseminating factual information, uniting the working class, and empowering members to take the lead, the UAW’s "Stand Up, Speak Up, Show Up" campaign aims to mobilize workers to challenge the billionaire class at the polls.
