UAW Commitment to Workers' Rights Unwavering Post-Election Results
UAW Prioritizes Worker Empowerment Amid Political Shift
UAW Family,
The recent re-election of Donald Trump as President has set a clear direction for the next four years in the United States. Despite this result not aligning with the preferences of many within our union, the United Auto Workers are steadfast in their commitment to elevating the standard of living for our members and the broader working class. Our focus remains on unity, solidarity, and enhancing working-class power, independent of the political administration in charge.
Throughout the election process, our CAP Councils engaged in discussions, members were polled, and the track records of the candidates were thoroughly analyzed. The majority of UAW members expressed their support for Biden and Harris, reflected in their voting patterns.
However, the UAW's position transcends political allegiance or individual personalities. As reiterated consistently, both major political parties have played roles in perpetuating a class struggle, marked by corporate America's long-standing assault on unions and the working class. Our objectives remain unchanged.
Commitment to domestic job creation, reforming the USMCA trade agreement, and holding corporations accountable for broken promises to American workers are central to our mission. We oppose any actions that undermine the union movement, foster division within the working class across national, racial, and gender lines, or provide undue benefits to the wealthy at the expense of crucial federal investments.
The UAW is prepared to challenge any political figure whose decisions negatively impact the working class, communities, and unions. Simultaneously, we are open to collaboration with politicians from any party who advocate for working-class interests.
Our current mission involves maintaining focus on critical issues: preventing plant closures, curbing the relocation of jobs to low-wage countries, and halting the erosion of blue-collar employment that fuels Wall Street profits. Ensuring secure retirement, fair wages, comprehensive healthcare, and balanced work-life opportunities for our members and all workers remains paramount.
As our members return to their routines, they confront ongoing challenges like corporate avarice, Wall Street exploitation, and political neglect. The guiding principle, as enshrined in our UAW Constitution, is "the hope of the worker in advancing society toward the ultimate goal of social and economic justice.”
Regardless of individual voting choices or sentiments regarding the election outcome, I urge everyone to engage actively. The UAW Constitution facilitates the presence of a CAP representative in every plant, CAP Councils in every region, and encourages participation in the political process.
Political activism spans all levels of government and sectors, influencing every contract, organizing initiative, and standard achieved by our union. This union belongs to you, and we invite your involvement today.
In solidarity,
UAW President Shawn Fain
