Governor Hochul Announces Completion of Key Adirondack Northway Bridge Project

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the completion of a $21.1 million project, replacing two key bridges carrying the Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87) over U.S. Route 9 in Warren County. This initiative enhances safety and travel along this crucial highway serving the North Country and Adirondacks. The aging twin spans, originally built in the 1960s, have been replaced with a single, more resilient structure. Situated between Exits 22 and 23 in Lake George, the new bridge has an expected lifespan of 75 years, ensuring future accessibility of this essential travel route.

Governor's Remarks on Infrastructure Investment

Governor Hochul emphasized, “By investing in roads and bridges, we ensure the long-term health and economy of our state.” This bridge upgrade along the Adirondack Northway will enhance mobility for thousands of daily motorists and bolster the durability of this critical artery for commerce and goods flow to the North Country.

Federal Funding Support for Infrastructure

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer noted, “The Adirondack Northway Bridges are vital connectors in Warren County, providing access to the beautiful Lake George region and supporting cross-border commerce with Canada.” The project, supported by nearly $19 million in federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law, boosts safety and economic vitality.

Senator Gillibrand Highlights Safety and Durability

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand stated, “This bridge replacement enhances safety and traffic flow, strengthening an essential piece of infrastructure in Upstate New York.” She praised the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for funding such transformative projects.

Key Features of the New Northway Bridge

The project, initiated in 2022, involved constructing a 323-foot, two-span, steel multi-girder bridge with a minimum vertical clearance of 49 feet 6 inches above U.S. Route 9. The bridge's design allowed for two of the three travel lanes to remain open during most of the construction period. Built using a cement-concrete mix, the new bridge boasts increased strength and lower greenhouse emissions.

New York State DOT's Commitment to Durable Infrastructure

Marie Therese Dominguez, New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner, declared, “Our investments in infrastructure will keep communities connected and resilient.” She highlighted the bridge’s role in easing travel and supporting regional economic engines.

Community Leaders Applaud Infrastructure Improvements

State Senator Dan Stec remarked on the improved accessibility and safety resulting from the bridge replacement, while Assemblymember Matthew Simpson celebrated the modern infrastructure upgrade as a milestone for travel within the Adirondack Park.
