In Commerce, Calif., numerous Teamsters, local leaders, and labor allies rallied with General President Sean M. O’Brien and General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman at the headquarters of Chedraui USA, parent company of Smart & Final, advocating for fair contracts for warehouse workers of Teamsters Local 630 in Los Angeles.

O’Brien asserted their determination to protect American jobs and ensure Smart & Final workers are safeguarded under a Teamsters contract. Lou Villalvazo, Local 630 Secretary-Treasurer, demanded a fair contract with decent wages and respect for their members, criticizing Chedraui's threats and labor law violations.

The rally was held in response to Chedraui USA's plans to shut two unionized Smart & Final warehouses in Commerce and Riverside, Calif., forcing workers to reapply for jobs with significantly lower pay at a new warehouse in Rancho Cucamonga.

Teamsters International Vice President, Chris Griswold, highlighted the workers' critical role during the pandemic and denounced Chedraui's disrespect towards their members. Fellow union members and community groups also joined the rally, marching around Chedraui USA's headquarters.

Longtime Smart & Final worker, Daniel Delgado, voiced their determination to fight for respect and a fair union contract. Chedraui USA is accused of violating federal and state laws, including California Assembly Bill 647.

Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, criticized Chedraui's disregard for workers' rights, assuring full support from the International in their fight for justice. Learn more about Teamsters Local 630 at teamsters630.org.
