AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler on Presidential Debate

WASHINGTON — AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler issued the following statement on tonight’s presidential debate:

“This election is a choice between Vice President Harris, a principled fighter for opportunity, and Donald Trump, an anti-union figure who betrays workers. Tonight, Americans heard why we need Kamala Harris in the White House. She is focused on progress with working people driving our success. In contrast, Trump offered more lies, personal attacks, and empty promises.

As we heard, Vice President Harris has decades of experience defending workers and holding corporations accountable. Her career in public office has focused on ensuring fair opportunities for workers. On key priorities—like union joining rights, affordable health care, secure retirement, and good jobs—a Harris-Walz administration will move our nation forward.

Tonight’s debate reminded us a second Trump term would be a nightmare for workers. Trump and Vance aim to make their Project 2025 agenda a reality, eviscerating unions, slashing jobs, and making it hard for workers to organize, while cutting wages and benefits and threatening job safety. Their campaign is based on division to hide their self-serving interests.

The labor movement is mobilizing to elect Harris and Walz because our country’s future—and our unions—are at risk. With union voters making up 20 percent of the electorate in key battleground states, workers are pivotal in this election. The Blue Wall will be built by labor, and the path to victory runs through America’s union halls. We know Kamala Harris and Tim Walz support working people, and we’re fully mobilized to support them.”
