“The Care Economy” at the forefront of Harris-Walz Economic Agenda
Last week, Kamala Harris’ administration released the Harris-Walz economic agenda highlighting care-related policies a central focus of her campaign. Her “care economy” plan would aim to support parents and other caregivers, making it more affordable to raise a family. In Harris’ DNC speech on Thursday night, she said she would not allow conservatives to end programs like HeadStart which “provide preschool and childcare for our children.”
One key policy priority for Kamala Harris is restoring the federal expanded child tax credit that was introduced by President Biden during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has proposed increasing the maximum credit from $2,000 to $3,600 per child and extending eligibility to lower-income families who currently do not qualify. At a campaign event in Raleigh, NC, on August 16th, Harris emphasized, “We know this works and has an impact on so many issues, including child poverty.”
Harris’ remarks are correct, research has found that this tax credit put child poverty at record low levels. In 2021, child poverty was almost cut in half from 2020, reaching over 61 million children in more than 36 million households. Child poverty levels rose again in 2022 when the tax credit expired. The credit was also beneficial in helping millions of Americans pay for essential items like clothing, food, and rent.
In addition to this expanded child tax credit, Harris is advocating for up to $6,000 in tax relief for middle- and low-income families with newborns. “Think what that means. That is a vital year of critical development of a child, and the costs can really add up, especially for young parents who need to buy diapers and clothes and a car seat and so much else.” Harris said at the same event.
The Harris-Walz campaign consistently demonstrates their support and care for American families and children through their policy initiatives and advocacy. Governor Walz’s notable achievement in establishing a paid family leave program in Minnesota highlights his dedication to improving family well-being and work-life balance. Together, Harris and Walz are actively working to create a more supportive and equitable environment for families across the nation.
