Pennsylvania invests $6M to boost tourism with new marketing program
Pennsylvania Invests Millions to Boost Tourism Industry
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is ramping up its efforts to draw more visitors with a substantial financial boost aimed at promoting its diverse attractions. The state has announced a $6 million investment through the Marketing to Attract Tourists Program to enhance overnight stays and increase visitors nationally and internationally.
With Governor Josh Shapiro's 2024-2025 bipartisan budget, $15 million is allocated to support tourism, an industry that contributes $76 billion annually and sustains over 486,000 jobs in Pennsylvania. This initiative builds on the Governor's launch of the Great American Getaway brand, which seeks to attract the vast populations residing within a few hours' drive.
Anne Ryan, DCED Deputy Secretary of Tourism, highlighted the economic impact of tourism: “Tourism generates over $76 billion a year for Pennsylvania’s economy and supports more than 486,000 jobs.” She emphasized the administration's commitment to expanding tourism opportunities across the state. The Marketing to Attract Tourists Program aims to spawn new visitor experiences, creating economic benefits for local communities.
The program is open to organizations eager to introduce fresh tourism activities and destinations. Applications are available online and can be submitted for three distinct areas:
- The Great American Getaway Co-Op: Eligible for destination marketing organizations and tourism-related businesses collaborating to craft unique travel experiences, encouraging exploration of Pennsylvania.
- Secure More in Sports: This invites entities to bring new sports events to Pennsylvania, resulting in increased visitor stays. Funding can assist with marketing, sales, and related expenses to secure event bids.
- Big Stage Events: Open to organizations hosting major events like concerts and conferences, aiming to attract significant visitor numbers for extended stays. Grants can cover costs related to logistics and promotions.
Pennsylvania's strategic location offers a prime getaway destination for those in major East Coast cities like New York, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. With nearly 73 million people living within a four-hour drive, the Commonwealth's attractions—from lush parks to bustling urban centers—are readily accessible for weekend adventures.
