LCCC receives $199,700 MTTC grant to enhance Mechatronics training

Lehigh Carbon Community College Boosts Mechatronics Training with New Grant

The manufacturing sector in the Lehigh Valley is set to benefit from advanced training opportunities thanks to a substantial grant. A $199,700 award from the Manufacturing PA Training-to-Career (MTTC) initiative will enable Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) to upgrade its Mechatronics program, focusing on equipping 20 workers annually with cutting-edge skills in automation, robotics, and electromechanical engineering.

Announced by Secretary Rick Siger of the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), the grant is part of the Shapiro Administration's ongoing commitment to strengthening Pennsylvania's workforce. This effort aligns with Governor Josh Shapiro's 2025-2026 budget proposal, which emphasizes workforce development as a key component of economic strategy.

“Governor Shapiro has been focused on expanding our workforce since day one. Through programs like Manufacturing PA Training-to-Career, we’re investing in the future of our workforce and helping to meet the needs of Pennsylvania businesses,” stated Secretary Siger. The initiative is expected to enhance job performance and facilitate smoother transitions for new employees entering the manufacturing industry.

Dr. Ann Bieber, President of LCCC, expressed enthusiasm about the grant's potential: “We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will enable us to expand our Mechatronics II program offerings and create a more robust stackable credential path. It provides upward mobility for workers in the community, providing higher paying roles and greater job stability.”

The MTTC funding will be utilized to acquire new equipment, hire staff, and conduct outreach to potential employers and graduates of the Mechatronics I program, broadening the reach of this advanced training opportunity.

Governor Shapiro's proposed 2025-26 budget earmarks over $160 million for new investments aimed at enhancing Pennsylvania’s economic competitiveness and addressing housing needs. Notable allocations include $12.5 million for WEDnetPA to bridge workforce gaps, $2 million for Career Connect internships, and $50 million each for innovation and housing improvements.
