First Ascent Biomedical Expands in PA, Creating 38 Jobs with $1.13M Investment

Biotech Expansion in Erie: First Ascent Biomedical to Create New Jobs

In a significant boost to Pennsylvania's life sciences sector, First Ascent Biomedical is set to expand its operations by opening a new laboratory space at Gannon University in Erie. This development promises to bring 38 new jobs to the region and is part of a broader initiative led by Governor Josh Shapiro to enhance innovation and economic growth in the state.

The biotech firm will invest $1.13 million into the project, which will include a 5,000-square-foot facility equipped with a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified laboratory. This advanced space will feature cutting-edge robotic technology designed to process tissue samples for thousands of cancer patients each year. First Ascent will be leasing this new space from Gannon University.

Governor Shapiro has expressed strong support for this initiative, highlighting it as a collaborative effort between public, private, and non-profit sectors. "This project is a big win for Pennsylvania and could not have happened without the public, private, and non-profit sectors working together to invest in our future," he stated.

The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) is backing the project with $1.72 million in incentives. Out of this, $1.5 million is allocated to Gannon University for the construction, while First Ascent will utilize $220,000 for its expansion efforts. Additional funding is also being sourced from Erie County and other sectors.

DCED Secretary Rick Siger emphasized the importance of the life sciences sector in Pennsylvania's economy, stating, "We couldn’t be more thrilled to support this new partnership between First Ascent and Gannon University. Projects like this underscore the impact the Life Science sector has across the Commonwealth."

Established in 2018, First Ascent Biomedical specializes in companion diagnostic testing, leveraging AI-enhanced Functional Precision Medicine to transform cancer treatment. CEO Jim Foote expressed gratitude towards the state’s support, highlighting the role of state leadership in improving cancer treatment outcomes and reducing costs.

The Shapiro Administration has been proactive in its economic development efforts, securing over $3.7 billion in private sector investments and creating more than 5,000 jobs since taking office. The Governor’s proposed 2025-26 budget includes a $50 million allocation to the PA Innovation program to further bolster job growth and economic development in the life sciences sector.
