Casino Workers Vote to Strike Amidst Contract Dispute
In a substantial move, over 140 employees at Caesars Southern Indiana Hotel & Casino have expressed their readiness to strike, signaling significant unrest at one of Indiana's most profitable casinos. Represented by Teamsters Local 89 and Operating Engineers Local 399, these workers are pushing back against management's current stance in their contract negotiations.
The vote to authorize a strike was overwhelmingly passed with a 98 percent majority. This decisive outcome reflects the workers' frustration over the lack of a fair contract offer from the casino's management. "Our members are united and ready to fight for the strongest possible agreement," stated Avral Thompson, President of Local 89, emphasizing the workers' determination to achieve a fair deal.
Caesars Southern Indiana, under the ownership of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, recorded revenue exceeding $240 million last year. Despite this financial success, employees argue that their contributions are not being adequately recognized through their compensation packages.
Sandra Ramirez, a slot attendant with over seven years at the casino, expressed the workers' sentiments: "I’ve worked at Caesars for over seven years, and we deserve a contract that values our hard work and dedication." Ramirez continued, "No one wants to strike, but if management keeps disrespecting us at the bargaining table, we’re ready to demand what we’ve earned."
The ongoing negotiations have been marked by disagreements on critical economic issues, notably retirement benefits, where management and workers remain far apart. Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman remarked, "At this point, the ball is entirely in management’s court," indicating that the resolution of this dispute lies with the casino's leadership.
