UAW urges Michigan legislature to support working class in lame duck session

UAW Urges Michigan Lawmakers to Prioritize Workers

DETROIT – In a recent statement, the United Auto Workers (UAW), the largest union in Michigan with over 300,000 active and retired members, called for the state legislature to take decisive action for working-class citizens in the upcoming legislative session.

The union emphasized that for too long, corporations and wealthy individuals have benefitted disproportionately from the wealth generated by workers, influencing political rules to their advantage and creating divisions among the working class. The UAW insists that this trend must be reversed.

As the Democratic control of the state government draws to a close, the UAW is urging legislators to champion the interests of the working class. "Michigan’s lawmakers can fight for the working class or do the bidding of corporations and big donors, but they can’t do both. It’s time to pick a side," the statement reads.

The union's agenda includes advocating for fair wages, accessible health care, dignified retirement, and time for family, while opposing corporate greed and divisive politics. They are closely monitoring the legislative actions and urge lawmakers to prioritize these issues.

In the forthcoming days, the UAW plans to push for legislation aimed at improving the lives of workers and safeguarding their rights and communities. The union highlights the need for leaders to prioritize the working class nationwide, beginning in Michigan, where the UAW was founded.
