UAW Stellantis Update: Layoffs Decreasing, New CEO, Contract Vigilance
Stellantis Leadership Changes Mark New Era
After a period marked by declining sales and significant layoffs, Stellantis is embarking on a path to recovery under new leadership. Antonio Filosa, previously overseeing North American operations, has been appointed CEO. In efforts to renew its commitment to the workforce, Filosa will engage with UAW leadership to enhance investments in American workers.
Contract Compliance and Member Involvement
UAW leadership emphasizes the importance of contract enforcement and the crucial role of its members on the shop floor in upholding agreements. Any suspected violations should be promptly reported to union stewards or committee members.
Progress in Reducing Indefinite Layoffs
The UAW reports a significant decrease in the number of indefinitely laid-off workers. From a peak of 3,228 on February 1, the number fell to 2,425 by June 1. With Stellantis set to fill an additional 423 vacancies, the number of indefinitely laid-off workers is expected to drop below 2,000. The union remains committed to eliminating all indefinite layoffs.
Clarification on Summer Hiring
Members have raised concerns about Stellantis hiring temporary workers during ongoing layoffs. The company must recall all laid-off full-time employees before hiring new ones, as per contract (M-16). However, temporary part-time hires can be made if no full-time need exists. Union members are urged to report any full-time hires to ensure compliance.
Expansion Includes Battery Plant Workers
Stellantis's StarPlus facility in Kokomo, a joint venture with Samsung, recently saw over 400 workers join the UAW under the Stellantis master agreement. This integration strengthens collective bargaining and unifies the workforce under one agreement.
Temporary Layoff Benefits at Dundee
Health benefits for 238 temporarily laid-off Dundee Engine workers were reinstated following negotiations that extended beyond the contractual obligations. The union continues discussions with Stellantis to ensure timely retooling while prioritizing health and safety standards.
Advancements in Belvidere Reopening
Stellantis is progressing with plans to reopen the Belvidere Assembly. Key personnel have been appointed, and assessments are underway to identify tasks for Skilled Trades. This signals forward movement in operational plans.
UAW members are encouraged to stay informed and vigilant in supporting contract enforcement efforts.
In solidarity,
Kevin Gotinsky
Director, UAW Stellantis Department
