UAW Poll: Kamala Harris Leads Trump by 22 Points in Battleground States
Detroit, MI – Recent polling data reveals a significant lead for Kamala Harris over Donald Trump among UAW members and their families in pivotal battleground states. Harris’ advantage has grown notably in the past month.
The survey, targeting union members in critical swing states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada, indicates that Harris is ahead of Trump by 22 points. This reflects the impact of the United Auto Workers' (UAW) extensive political outreach, engaging 293,000 active and retired members across these key regions.
UAW's strategic outreach efforts have been instrumental in garnering support for Harris. Through a dynamic approach involving phone, text, and mail campaigns, alongside direct discussions at workplaces and within communities, the union has made significant strides. In Michigan alone, a comprehensive door-to-door effort has engaged over 200,000 union households.
Among those members who have had contact with the UAW regarding the presidential race, Harris’ lead over Trump increases to 29 points. This illustrates the success of the union's initiative to educate members on vital economic issues such as overtime pay protection, revising detrimental trade policies, preventing job offshoring, enhancing retirement security, and combating corporate excess.
Notably, the polling also highlights shifts among crucial demographic groups. Harris is now leading by five points among white UAW members who lack a college degree, a demographic that previously leaned towards Trump.
“When members hear directly from other members about what’s at stake and which candidate will have their backs, we’re able to break through,” stated UAW President Shawn Fain. “By engaging our members and highlighting the issues that matter – their paychecks, their families, and their futures — the union makes a real difference.”
Fain further commented, “The candidates’ track records speak for themselves. Harris has been in our corner in tough fights. Trump’s been a scab who passed NAFTA 2.0 and wants to bust unions. When you break it down like that and reach members in one-on-one conversations, the choice for president becomes clear.”
Additional insights from the poll include:
- Harris enjoys a 29-point lead among those contacted by the union.
- In Michigan, UAW members support Harris by a 20-point margin, with 54% backing her compared to 34% for Trump.
- Non-college-educated men show a 14-point preference for Harris.
- UAW members also show strong support for U.S. Senate candidate Elissa Slotkin, with an 18-point lead.
The data underscores the UAW’s successful engagement, translating into escalating support for Harris in states crucial to the election outcome. By emphasizing direct, face-to-face interaction, worksite engagement, and personal outreach, the UAW is influencing voter sentiment significantly, asserting itself as an electoral powerhouse. In the 2020 elections, UAW members contributed to 9.2% of Biden-Harris votes and accounted for 84% of their winning margin in Michigan.
The UAW's strategy traces back to the 2023 Stand Up strike and movement, driven by the motto “Stand Up, Speak Up, Show Up,” aiming to combat corporate interests at the polls through fact-based, member-led mobilization.
