UAW Hosts Rally for Senate Candidate Elissa Slotkin and Canvass Kick-Off
FLINT — Michigan's central role in U.S. manufacturing and union advocacy will be underscored this Saturday, September 28, with a rally and canvassing event in Flint. Organized by the United Auto Workers (UAW), the event features U.S. Senate candidate Elissa Slotkin and aims to promote her candidacy and the union's endorsement.
Remarks will be delivered by UAW President Shawn Fain, UAW Region 1D Director Steve Dawes, and Rep. Slotkin to kick off the rally.
This Flint event is part of a larger statewide effort by the union. UAW members across Michigan are actively canvassing to engage fellow workers, retirees, and families within UAW households. The initiative stresses the necessity of electing candidates who support a pro-worker stance and oppose corporate greed, emphasizing the future of manufacturing both locally and nationally.
“Rep. Slotkin has been a champion for autoworkers and union members in Michigan while her opponent has consistently voted to weaken workers’ rights. We need Rep. Slotkin to be Michigan’s next senator,” stated Steve Dawes, UAW Region 1D Director. “We also know that the path to the White House could run through Michigan. Vice President Kamala Harris has walked our picket lines, showing her support not only for labor but for all working-class people.”

In August, the UAW initiated an extensive political campaign, one of its most significant in decades, aimed at electing Kamala Harris as President and placing other pro-worker candidates in office. The campaign involves a robust mobilization of UAW members both online and on the ground, including a door-to-door outreach program to connect with members, retirees, and their families.
The union's active and retired membership, totaling one million, is set to play a crucial role in supporting the Harris-Walz campaign. The UAW's constituency provided a notable portion of the votes for the Biden-Harris ticket in 2020, accounting for 9.2% of their total votes in Michigan.
