UAW Endorses Graham Platner for U.S. Senate, Champion for Workers
UAW Backs Graham Platner for Maine Senate Seat
The United Auto Workers (UAW) have officially announced their support for Graham Platner in the race for the United States Senate in Maine.
Graham Platner, who brings a diverse background as a U.S. military veteran and oyster farmer, has been a dedicated resident of Maine throughout his life. His campaign is committed to reviving the American dream for workers struggling to maintain a quality life. Platner's extensive service record and personal experiences equip him with the leadership skills necessary to advocate for worker-centric policies and address pressing economic and political challenges.
With nearly 2,000 UAW members residing in Maine, including professionals such as marine draftsmen at Bath Iron Works, as well as employees from various nonprofits, the Portland Museum of Art, and the University of Maine System, the union represents a significant segment of the working class. These individuals are part of an expanding movement that seeks economic equity and endorses candidates championing the rights and dignity of all workers.
UAW President Shawn Fain emphasized the stark economic disparities, stating, “Inequality is out of control in our country. Today, the top 1% have more wealth than the bottom 95% of humanity combined. Graham understands this, and at a time when too many politicians take their cues from billionaires and corporate lobbyists, he has chosen to stand with the working class.” Fain highlighted Platner's focus on pressing worker issues like living wages, healthcare access, retirement security, and work-life balance, noting, “The UAW is proud to endorse candidates like Platner taking on the broken status quo.”
Brandon Mancilla, Director of UAW Region 9A, remarked on Platner's resonance with Maine citizens, stating, “Graham Platner has emerged as a voice for the people of Maine fed up with the corrupting influence of the oligarchy and money in our politics.” Mancilla praised Platner's ability to galvanize a movement that aims to address the challenges facing both Maine and national working families.
Trent Vellela, President of the UAW’s Maine CAP Council from Bath Marine Draftsmen’s Association (BMDA-UAW Local 3999), echoed these sentiments, saying, “I think he’s the real deal. Graham directly addresses the hard issues in a straightforward and relatable way. He is clear about his principles and his plan to achieve positive outcomes for the working people of Maine. We’re excited to endorse Graham Platner for Senate and look forward to seeing him in DC.”
