(WASHINGTON) – In a significant political development, Lori Chavez-DeRemer has been confirmed by a bipartisan Senate vote as the new U.S. Secretary of Labor. Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien expressed his support, stating:
“Lori Chavez-DeRemer will do an excellent job leading the U.S. Department of Labor. We are committed to fighting alongside her to protect the working class and strengthen our nation by putting workers first.
Chavez-DeRemer's ability to unite political factions was underscored by her bipartisan approval, reflecting her competence to represent all Americans. O'Brien commended the bipartisan efforts, appreciating the coalition of senators and President Donald Trump for nominating a candidate focused on labor concerns.
“Chavez-DeRemer earned support on both sides of the aisle, highlighting her ability to bridge divides and serve all Americans effectively. The Teamsters thank the bipartisan coalition of senators who put the needs of working people ahead of politics, and President Donald Trump for boldly nominating her to oversee the Department of Labor.
While Chavez-DeRemer's nomination received significant backing, O'Brien critiqued those who opposed it, naming political figures who, in his view, prioritized political maneuvers over workers' interests.
“But let’s be clear — hardworking Americans should not forget who voted against them by trying to tank this nomination. Democratic holdouts participated in Chuck Schumer’s political theater instead of working together to get something done for working people. Unsurprisingly, Rand Paul did what he always does — shilled for Big Business and the union-busting National Right to Work Foundation.
Emphasizing the importance of dismantling political barriers, O'Brien reaffirmed the Teamsters' dedication to bipartisan collaboration to advance labor rights and prioritize American workers.
“This system of political selfishness must be dismantled if workers are going to get ahead. The Teamsters will continue to work with anyone — regardless of political party — to address the needs of all workers and build a strong bipartisan block that returns the American worker to the forefront of policymaking.”
