(CHICAGO) – In a significant victory, FreshPoint Chicago drivers, under Sysco's ownership, voted to join Teamsters Local 710. The 29 drivers aim to combat at-will employment, push for better wages, improved benefits, and enhanced working conditions.
"We've been working more for the same pay since Sysco's acquisition," said Jose Medina, a FreshPoint driver. "After management ignored our concerns, we decided to join the Teamsters for workplace rights."
Sysco's acquisition of the former Greco and Sons in 2021 led to longer hours and stagnant pay. Sysco fought the union drive with intense anti-union practices, including hiring union-busting consultants.
"Sysco's extreme measures couldn't deter these determined workers," commented Michael J. Cales, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 710. "Despite facing relentless intimidation, drivers united against management's tactics. We're thrilled to have them at Local 710 and look forward to their first contract." Recently, Teamsters scored several wins at Sysco subsidiaries. Drivers in Kansas City, logistics workers in Kent, Wash., and warehouse workers in Detroit also joined the Teamsters this month.
"Sysco's workers are exhausted by the company's disregard for them," stated Tom Erickson, Teamsters Warehouse Division Director. "Their exploitation won't be masked by union-busting consultants. We're standing against Sysco for every worker's dignity and union contracts."
