Squirrelly LLC Joins Forces with Teamsters, Embraces New Beginnings for Former Jack Cooper Drivers
The landscape of the carhaul industry is seeing a significant shift as Squirrelly LLC, a new player in the field, establishes its operations with the backing of Teamsters Local 89. The company, based out of Stone Mountain, Georgia, proudly integrates former drivers from the now-defunct Jack Cooper, all of whom have eagerly signed union cards and aligned with the Teamsters. This move ensures their participation under the National Master Automobile Transporters Agreement (NMATA).
Avral Thompson, who serves both as Director of the Teamsters Carhaul Division and President of Local 89, expressed enthusiasm about this development. “This is a great day for carhaulers and for the future of our industry,” he remarked. Thompson highlighted the strategic steps being taken by these experienced drivers: “With 10 new rigs on the way and experienced drivers taking control of their future, Carhaul Teamsters are stepping in to fill the void left by Jack Cooper’s closure.”
The formation of this new partnership follows a dedicated effort by the Teamsters Carhaul Division, which secured voluntary recognition from Squirrelly LLC's management to join the NMATA promptly.
Todd Davis, a driver who first experienced union benefits in 2012 with Jack Cooper, voiced his optimism about the transition. “I was a nonunion carhauler until Jack Cooper hired me in 2012. That’s when I first experienced what it meant to be respected, paid fairly, and treated right,” Davis said. Reflecting on Jack Cooper's collapse, he added, “When Jack Cooper collapsed, I thought those days might be over, but thanks to the Teamsters, I’m proud to be working under the NMATA again. We’re building something new here, and we’re making history with a minority-owned company that believes in doing things the right way.”
