NUHW Members Volunteer for Fire Relief Amid Ongoing Strike Efforts
Volunteers Step Up Amidst Wildfire Disruptions
As wildfires continue to impact the Los Angeles area, members of the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) shifted their focus from picket lines to volunteer efforts, assisting those affected by the fires. With some picket lines, including the one at LAMC, closed due to the fires, union members dedicated their time to support various relief activities throughout the city.
One group of NUHW volunteers contributed their efforts at 9thirtyLA, a venue now serving as a temporary refuge for fire evacuees. At this location, members played a crucial role in organizing the shelter environment, distributing food, and providing necessary supplies to those in need.
Meanwhile, another group headed to the Santa Anita racetrack, which had become a hub for donated goods. Described by some as resembling a "landfill" or "the worst swap meet ever," the site required significant help sorting through toys and clothing. Volunteers also took part in media interviews with Good Day Los Angeles and Telemundo, receiving supportive messages from fellow volunteers such as “we’re rooting for you.”
Linda Cortes, a worker involved in the strike, shared her perspective, saying, “It kind of gives you a reality check. It’s a reminder to be grateful for what you have no matter what.”

Picket Line and Support Updates
In terms of strike activities, a single picket line is set to continue in San Diego on Tuesday, while the Riverside line has been called off due to expected high winds. Strong picket lines were seen today in locations such as Anaheim, San Diego, and Fontana, with support from groups like the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice. A virtual all-member Town Hall meeting is planned for Sunday, January 19 at 10 a.m.
To assist members facing difficulties this week, the hardship fund committee is easing application requirements, emphasizing participation in picket lines and volunteer efforts for fire victims as qualifying activities.

Solidarity and Upcoming Actions
As NUHW prepares for further negotiations with Kaiser on Thursday, members are organizing a solidarity action by distributing stickers in collaboration with other unions within Kaiser facilities. These stickers will be shared with both NUHW members who have returned to work and other union members demonstrating support for the ongoing efforts.
