Significant Union Contract Wins for NUHW Members

As 2024 draws to a close, a group of new members of the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) have successfully secured their initial union contracts.

At Rogers Behavioral Health in San Diego, a team of 19 workers, including mental health therapists, registered nurses, and clinical assistants, have reached a landmark agreement inspired by the contract of their counterparts at Rogers in the Bay Area.

The agreement with the mental health services provider comprises several key provisions:

  • Limits on caseloads for employees
  • Restrictions on the number of new patients assigned to each therapist or registered nurse
  • A clause allowing workers to waive their no-strike provision if the company seeks to change working conditions
  • A ban on job losses due to the implementation of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence

This successful negotiation motivated the San Diego workers to join NUHW as well. Their newly established contract introduces pay scales that will immediately boost salaries by 3 to 24 percent, with further salary increases of over 5 percent annually for the next three years.

"We are off to a great start," stated Laurel Quinlan, a therapist at Rogers San Diego. "We appreciate the achievements of our colleagues at Rogers Walnut Creek, and we are excited to join all Rogers workers in California as NUHW members."

Meanwhile, at Seton Medical Center in Daly City, around 14 pharmacists who recently became NUHW members will receive a 12 percent pay raise within the first three months of their contract. This agreement also mandates that AHMC Healthcare, the owner of Seton, establish a salary scale that could lead to further pay raises before the contract's expiration in December 2025.

"This agreement is a significant step forward, but we're eager to continue securing strong contracts and match our colleagues at other hospitals," said Peggy Chiu Wong, a pharmacist at the hospital. "With the unity we demonstrated in our initial contract negotiations, I'm confident we can achieve that."
