LAUSD Administrators Opt for Teamsters Local 2010 Affiliation

(LOS ANGELES) – In a decisive move, members of the Associated Administrators of Los Angeles (AALA) have opted to join forces with Teamsters Local 2010. Representing a diverse group of 3,000 individuals, including principals, assistant principals, and various coordinators, this union aims to enhance their negotiating power within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

"This affiliation furthers our mission to build Local 2010 into a powerhouse for workers’ rights and fair wages in California education," stated Jason Rabinowitz, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 2010. Highlighting the benefits of this partnership, Rabinowitz emphasized the collective strength and support that comes with being part of North America's robust union network.

Taking office in June 2024, AALA President Maria Nichols committed to addressing persistent workload issues for her members. With upcoming contract negotiations set for January 2025, Nichols identified union affiliation as a strategic measure to bolster their bargaining capabilities. “Students cannot make significant gains when school leaders are pummeled with time sensitive tasks that are taking time away from achieving our instructional goals,” Nichols remarked, expressing optimism about the new partnership.

Julio Melara, an assistant principal, voiced a collective desire for fair treatment from the LAUSD. He expressed hope for recognition of their efforts: “The time has come to ensure the district negotiates with us in good faith and proves that ‘investing in staff’ resonates true. And in the spirit of equity, collaboration, and excellence, we hope that they value us and our innumerable contributions to the second-largest district in the nation.”

Teamsters Local 2010, part of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, already represents a wide array of workers across California's higher education landscape, including roles within the University of California and California State University systems.
