The employees at Iowa Northern Railway have made a decisive move to unionize, opting to become members of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED), a part of the Teamsters Rail Conference, through a unanimous vote.
Thomas Kirby, Director of Organizing at BMWED, expressed his support, stating, "We welcome our newest brothers on the Iowa Northern and are enthusiastic to help make their railroad a better place to work." He emphasized the positive relationship built with the new members and is confident about future progress.
The primary motivation for these workers to join the union is the prospect of achieving higher wages, enhanced benefits, and improved working conditions that are typically associated with Teamsters representation.
Brian Rumler, General Chairman of the BMWED's Unified System Division (USD), noted, "Such a resounding vote signifies the trust this new group of members has in our brotherhood." He highlighted the collective strength and pride that comes with USD representation.
Operating from Waterloo, Iowa, the Class III Iowa Northern Railway covers over 250 miles of track across the state. It connects with three Class I railroads, facilitating more efficient freight transportation.
Established in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. More information can be found at Teamster.org. Follow their updates on Twitter @Teamsters or like their page on Facebook at Facebook.com/teamsters.
