(WASHINGTON) – Costco has reduced scheduled talks with the Teamsters from five to three days per week, exacerbating tensions as the January 31 contract deadline looms. This comes just after the company rejected 98% of the Teamsters' proposals.
“Our members work hard daily, but Costco's executives won't engage in negotiations,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “Costco’s reluctance shows disregard for a fair process.”
Despite CEO Ron Vachris assuring investors of “fair” and “timely” negotiations during a quarterly earnings call, Costco reduced bargaining days by 40%. The company posted earnings surpassing Wall Street projections.
“Costco's refusal to meet shows a lack of commitment,” remarked Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division. “This delays progress and risks a labor dispute.”
The contract for over 18,000 Costco Teamsters expires January 31, 2025, and without a fair agreement, workers may strike.
“Their refusal to negotiate is shameful,” stated Tony Gonzales, a 42-year employee. “We work hard—why can't corporate do the same?”
Costco's shift from a “pro-worker” stance to prioritizing corporate greed prompted the Teamsters to file unfair labor practice charges. Workers demand a contract reflecting Costco's substantial profits and “pro-worker” values.
Negotiations, canceled for today and Monday, will resume Tuesday. Visit Teamster.org for updates. Follow @Teamsters on Twitter and visit Facebook.com/teamsters.
