Cook County Board of Review Workers Secure First AFSCME Contract
Landmark Contract Secured by Cook County Board of Review Workers
In a significant move for labor rights, over 100 employees of the Cook County Board of Review have successfully negotiated their inaugural contract under AFSCME, showcasing the power of collective bargaining. The unionization effort, which culminated in a contract ratified by an overwhelming majority, marks a milestone for these public service workers.
The newly established agreement, which garnered more than 95% approval from union members, received its final nod from Cook County commissioners on Thursday. These workers, responsible for the crucial task of reviewing property tax assessments and assisting homeowners with appeals, are now experiencing an enhanced workplace environment.
Roberta Lynch, Executive Director of AFSCME Council 31 and an AFSCME vice president, stated, “Together in our union, Board of Review employees are securing greater fairness in the workplace.” This sentiment reflects the union’s efforts to address longstanding pay disparities among county workers.
The contract includes notable financial improvements, such as a $2,500 bonus, a 2% salary increase effective June 1, and an additional 4% raise commencing December 1. Moreover, employees with six months or more of seniority will benefit from a $1,000 retention bonus.
This agreement underscores the "union difference" by providing better wages, enhanced respect, and a stronger voice for employees. The Board of Review staff now joins a robust community of over 4,000 Cook County workers in various public service sectors as part of AFSCME.
The path to this contract began in July 2024 when the union was certified, leading to negotiations that started in November of the same year. The contract is set to run through November 30, 2027, symbolizing a significant step towards improved working conditions.
The successful negotiation not only secured a contract but also empowered the workers, strengthening public service and demonstrating the potential achievements possible within AFSCME.
