AFT Releases Video Commemorating Oct. 7, 2023, Attacks Anniversary
Commemoration of the October 7th Anniversary: A Call for Peace and Reflection
WASHINGTON—In a bid to honor the first anniversary of the attacks on October 7, 2023, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has unveiled a video produced in collaboration with partners in the Middle East. AFT President Randi Weingarten shared a statement reflecting on the profound impact of this date.
Weingarten emphasized the significance of October 7, 2023, likening its impact on Israel, Gaza, and the broader Middle East to the effect of September 11 on the United States. She described the day as a turning point marked by a violent attack by Hamas, which resulted in the loss of 1,200 lives, including Israelis, Jews, Muslims, Bedouins, and Asian guest workers.
The ongoing conflict has seen escalated destruction, including extensive damage in Gaza by Israeli military forces, persistent attacks by Hezbollah on Israeli civilians, and indiscriminate violence from Jewish settlers on Palestinian territories in the West Bank. The refusal by both Hamas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree on a cease-fire has prolonged the conflict, with Iran's recent bombings contributing to the tension.
Weingarten acknowledged the deep emotional toll these events have taken on communities both in the Middle East and internationally, affecting schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. She expressed the union's mourning for those who have died and hopes for the living, advocating for peace, an end to the violence, and the safe return of hostages.
In lieu of issuing more resolutions or statements, the AFT has chosen to focus on amplifying the voices of Jews and Palestinians who are advocating for peace, security, freedom, justice, and self-determination. Weingarten highlighted the importance of listening to these voices, which is why the union has facilitated visits from groups like Standing Together, Parents Circle, and Hand in Hand to the United States to share their experiences and visions for a peaceful future.
The AFT has been committed to the pursuit of a two-state solution since 2016, aiming to deepen engagement and reject binary perspectives. In line with this commitment, Weingarten invited allies to reflect on the events of October 7 and the subsequent turmoil, encouraging them to share their dreams for a more harmonious future.
Weingarten urged people to watch the shared video, listen to the testimonies, and discuss them with friends and family. "You may agree or disagree—that is your right—but hear them. Listen to them. They are trying to forge a path forward for peace, freedom, security and self-determination for the 7 million Palestinians and the 7 million Jews who call Israel and the Palestinian territories their home."
The AFT represents 1.8 million members, including pre-K through 12th-grade teachers, paraprofessionals, higher education faculty, government employees, healthcare workers, and early childhood educators.
