AFT President Weingarten Praises Walz's Debate Performance Against Vance

Highlights from the Vice Presidential Debate between JD Vance and Tim Walz

ST. PAUL, Minn.—Following the vice presidential debate, Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), released a statement expressing her views on the event. The debate featured Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a former high school teacher and football coach in Mankato, Minn.

Weingarten emphasized the importance of acknowledging the results of the 2020 election and condemning the January 6 insurrection. She stated, "If you cannot say that Joe Biden won the election in 2020, if you cannot condemn the Jan. 6 insurrection, if you pretend there was a peaceful transfer of power, you are disqualified from being vice president."

In her statement, Weingarten critiqued Vance for allegedly creating misleading narratives, particularly regarding immigration and housing prices. She also highlighted Vance's denial of his support for a national abortion ban and his claim that former President Donald Trump saved Obamacare.

On the other hand, Weingarten praised Tim Walz for his performance, noting his practical approach to addressing issues during the debate. "Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz won tonight’s debate against Vance by doing what good teachers do: On every question he was asked, he offered practical solutions for a better future," Weingarten commented.

She further lauded Walz's values and commitment to the American dream, drawing parallels with Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. "Walz’s basic humanity and decency showed through tonight. We couldn’t be prouder of Walz, who shares our values and our commitment to the American dream," she remarked.

Weingarten concluded by highlighting the determination of teachers and AFT members across the country to support Harris and Walz in the upcoming election. "We are traveling the country and keeping a relentless schedule until Election Day to get out the vote," she stated, emphasizing the significance of the election for families and working individuals.

The AFT, representing 1.8 million members including educators, healthcare workers, and government employees, continues to play an active role in political advocacy and education reform.
