AFT President Applauds Biden's Student Debt Relief for 5 Million Borrowers
Major Debt Relief Measures Announced for Over 5 Million Borrowers
WASHINGTON—The Biden administration has introduced significant measures to provide debt relief to more than 5 million borrowers, accumulating a total of $183.6 billion. This relief comes through enhanced Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), borrower defense, and disability discharge approvals. For more information, visit the official announcement.
AFT President Randi Weingarten praised President Biden's commitment since his early days in office to support Americans pursuing higher education without the burden of overwhelming student debt. “From Day 1, President Biden has stood up again and again for the millions of Americans who want to pursue a college education without having their lives derailed by unsustainable student debt,” Weingarten stated, emphasizing the administration's resilience in the face of legal challenges.
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has actively campaigned for widespread college affordability through debt relief. This initiative has seen the union engage in various efforts, including hosting member town halls, conducting student debt clinics, and participating in political advocacy. AFT has also been involved in legal actions against figures and entities like former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and loan servicers such as MOHELA and Navient.
Reflecting on the previous administration, Weingarten expressed the union's determination to avoid a repeat of past policies where debt relief was often denied, and the Department of Education favored servicers and for-profit colleges. “We will continue to fight for opportunity for all,” she affirmed, expressing gratitude for the relief provided to millions of Americans and their families.
The AFT is committed to advocating for debt relief in the years to come, pledging ongoing support for affected individuals. The organization represents 1.8 million members, including educators, healthcare workers, and government employees, highlighting its broad influence and commitment to public welfare.
