AFT President Applauds Biden-Harris Milestone on Student Debt Relief
White House Reaches New Milestone in Public Service Loan Forgiveness
WASHINGTON—The Biden-Harris administration has achieved a significant milestone in supporting borrowers, particularly those in public service roles, according to a recent announcement.
Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), commented on the administration’s commitment to public service workers. She emphasized the administration's dedication to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which promises debt relief after a decade of repayments for those in public service. "From day one, the Biden-Harris administration has proudly stood up for public service workers shackled by student debt," Weingarten stated. This stands in contrast to previous barriers set by the Trump administration and former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.
The burden of student debt has long limited economic opportunities for many, including AFT members. Weingarten highlighted the case of Kelly Beckford, an AFT member who experienced significant relief from debt. Beckford was present with President Biden to celebrate the milestone, marking a pivotal moment for those affected. Details of this event can be found here.
Public service roles such as educators, firefighters, nurses, and first responders are crucial to communities. The Biden-Harris administration has recognized the importance of rewarding their contributions, Weingarten noted. The AFT has been actively involved in reaching this point by conducting student debt clinics, engaging in political advocacy, and holding entities like Betsy DeVos and loan servicers MOHELA and Navient accountable through legal means.
Weingarten acknowledged that while progress has been made, the journey continues. She expressed gratitude for the support received by AFT members and their families, who now have more assurance that their interests are being safeguarded.
The AFT represents a diverse group of 1.8 million individuals, including pre-K through 12th-grade teachers, paraprofessionals, higher education staff, government employees, healthcare workers, and early childhood educators.
