As the world reflects on the life of Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the remarkable age of 100 on December 29, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) pays tribute to his enduring impact on public service.

AFSCME President Lee Saunders articulated the profound influence of the former president in a statement released during the National Day of Mourning. Saunders honored Carter as a leader who "dedicated his life to doing everything he could to protect and lift up his fellow man."

Jimmy Carter, the 39^th president of the United States, served from 1977 to 1981. His political journey began as a Georgia state senator, followed by a term as the state's governor from 1971 to 1975. Despite a single-term presidency, Carter's post-White House years were marked by his efforts to advance human rights globally, spearheaded by the establishment of the Carter Center. His humanitarian efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

During his presidency, Carter set a moral benchmark, advocating for civil rights and demonstrating the potential for America’s highest office to champion global human rights. AFSCME’s Saunders remarked on Carter’s dedication, noting his continued advocacy through initiatives like Habitat for Humanity well into his later years.

On Thursday, Carter was remembered during a funeral service at Washington National Cathedral, where President Joe Biden delivered a poignant eulogy. Biden highlighted Carter’s integrity, stating, “Jimmy Carter’s friendship taught me, and through his life taught me, that strength of character is more than title or the power we hold. It’s the strength to understand that everyone should be treated with dignity, respect.”

Inspired by Carter’s legacy, AFSCME members continue to draw motivation from his lifelong commitment to community and public service. “We will continue to do everything we can to strengthen and empower our communities, in his memory,” Saunders emphasized.
