AFL-CIO Reacts to Lori Chavez-DeRemer Labor Sec. Nomination

The Facts -

  • Liz Shuler praises Lori Chavez-DeRemer's pro-labor record in Congress.
  • Trump's nominees have ties to Project 2025, endangering worker rights.
  • AFL-CIO will oppose any efforts to roll back worker rights and protections.

AFL-CIO President's Statement on Labor Policies

Liz Shuler, AFL-CIO President, commented:

Lori Chavez-DeRemer has established a strong pro-labor reputation in Congress, being among the few Republicans supporting the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act and cosponsoring the Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act.

However, with Donald Trump as the U.S. President-elect, it's uncertain what Chavez-DeRemer can pursue as Secretary of Labor in an administration with a largely anti-worker stance. Despite distancing himself from Project 2025 during his campaign, Trump has nominated several cabinet members closely linked to the initiative. The 900-page Project 2025 proposals might remove overtime pay, weaken health standards, and curb organizing rights.

The AFL-CIO pledges to collaborate with anyone supporting workers but will oppose efforts to erode rights secured through years of struggle. You must choose between supporting workers or aligning with Project 2025—you cannot do both.
