Philadelphia Bus Workers Secure Historic Wage Increases

In a groundbreaking move, over 200 bus drivers and attendants in Philadelphia have achieved unprecedented wage increases after ratifying the first union contract negotiated by Teamsters Local 623. The three-year agreement promises a robust set of improvements, including a formal grievance system, seniority-based route bidding, and the largest salary hikes in the company's history.
According to Pete Hopkins, a dedicated driver at Philadelphia Transportation, “We have never received pay increases like this ever. This contract addresses many of our needs and we are grateful that we were part of the entire negotiating process.”
These transportation professionals, essential to the city's daily operations by ensuring the safe and punctual transit of students, will benefit from the union's efforts.
Richard Hooker, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 623, praised the workers' solidarity, stating, “Today, Philly Transportation workers will enjoy the fruits of their hard work. The brand-new protections and truly monumental wage increases are just an example of what happens when workers weaponize solidarity.”
Teamsters Local 623 is a formidable union that represents a diverse group of workers throughout the Philadelphia region. For more information, visit teamsterslocal623.org.
