Detroit School Bus Workers Secure Enhanced Contract Terms
In a significant development for Detroit Public Schools, bus drivers, monitors, and mechanics at National Trails have successfully ratified a collective bargaining agreement, marking their first with Teamsters Local 243. This milestone comes after a decisive vote with a 96 percent approval rate, securing substantial wage hikes, paid sick leave, holiday compensation, and pivotal union protections.
Phil Turner, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 243, emphasized the importance of the agreement, stating, “As Teamsters, we know an organizing campaign is not complete until we negotiate a strong first contract, and we fought like hell to get it done.” Turner credited the determination of the union members for achieving a fair and competitive contract within the school transportation sector.
The new four-year contract is designed to recognize and protect the vital role these employees play in ensuring safe and reliable services for students and their families. Bus driver and steward Tawanda Lewis expressed satisfaction with the agreement: “We deserve to be valued and respected, and this contract makes sure that will happen. We take safety seriously and always lead by example. Now, we have a strong first contract to keep doing what we do best — serving our community with pride.”
Teamsters Local 243, which represents a diverse workforce across Michigan, continues to advocate for improved conditions and benefits for its members. Additional information about their efforts and initiatives is available at http://www.teamsters243.org/.
