Historic Revitalization in Northwestern Pennsylvania: State Grants Over $1 Million to Community Projects
The heart of northwestern Pennsylvania’s communities is seeing a resurgence, as the Shapiro-Davis Administration has allocated more than $1 million to revitalize eight projects across Crawford, Erie, and Warren counties.
This initiative, part of the Main Street Matters program managed by the state Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), is part of a $20 million grant effort to rejuvenate urban centers and support local businesses. Lt. Gov. Austin Davis emphasized the importance of these areas, saying, "Pennsylvania’s historic Main Streets and downtowns are part of what makes the Commonwealth a great place to live, work and visit."
Significant funding is directed towards Meadville, which will receive $560,027 for vital structural repairs and a roof replacement at the city’s historical Market House. Additionally, a $16,875 planning grant aims to explore affordable housing options in downtown Meadville.
Mayor Jaime Kinder expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting these grants as essential components in creating a sustainable and joyful community in Meadville. “These Main Street Matters grants are key pieces of a larger puzzle, helping us build a future rooted in sustainability, quality of life and joy right here in Meadville,” she noted.
Crawford County also benefits from the state’s vision, with a $60,500 grant awarded to the Greater Titusville Development Foundation for facade improvements. Commissioner Christopher Seeley praised the collaboration with local leaders to enhance the living quality in small towns.
Across the region, the Main Street Matters program supports various projects, including Erie’s Historic East Bayfront Neighborhood Strategic Plan and the City of Erie Flagship Fund Microgrant Program. In Warren County, the focus is on the Commercial District Facade Program.
With 81 projects funded through this initiative, the demand for such strategic investments is evident, with over 200 applications received, amounting to requests exceeding $43 million. Looking ahead, the Shapiro-Davis administration plans to continue this momentum, proposing an additional $20 million in the 2025-26 budget.
