A recent poll by EPIC-MRA reveals that 82% of Michigan voters demand that all gas tax revenue should be allocated for road and bridge repairs. The Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association (MITA) states this has not been the case for years, leading to a $3.9 billion investment deficit.
Currently, of the $1.1 billion generated from the state's 6% gas sales tax, only around $50 million is assigned to roads and bridges. The rest is diverted to education and local communities.
"The consistent need for a long-term, fair, and sustainable infrastructure strategy from Michigan’s leaders is confirmed by this poll. Numerous studies indicate that Michigan’s infrastructure will deteriorate further without timely investments," stated Rich Coppersmith, MITA's executive vice president.
"We hope that these results will encourage Michigan’s leaders to take the necessary steps and approve a long-term infrastructure investment plan that will ensure Michigan's future prosperity."
