Termed as the 'Rebuild Illinois' program, this ambitious project forms one of the governor's top priorities. The state budget and capital plan outline it, intending to "repair and fix infrastructure" with a budget of "$41 billion over 6 years". The primary focus would be on significant improvements in roads, bridges, and safety across Illinois.

These real and tangible projects will directly impact our economy's strength and residents' quality of life," Pritzker added.

Part of this plan includes significant upgrades to I-55, the Stevenson Expressway, which has been a sore point for commuters due to congestion. The state will invest over $360 million in improvements.

"We're set to bring 49 bridges to a state of good repair and implement improvements to enhance safety, traffic flow, and active transportation," stated Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman.

Investments are also planned for airports and waterways, but most people will witness the progress in the form of roadwork. "Though I'll apologize for the orange cones and the ensuing traffic, I won't regret the end result. We're gearing up for decades of top-notch roads, bridges, airports, and riverports," Pritzker explained.

'Rebuild Illinois', the largest capital program in Illinois history, was first passed in 2019 and continues to remain a major focal point.
