Houston Bus Operators Secure Enhanced Benefits in New Teamsters Agreement

The recent contract ratification by over 400 Transdev bus drivers marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of improved working conditions and benefits for public transportation workers in Houston. Represented by Teamsters Local 988, these operators play a crucial role in the city's transit system.

With an overwhelming 99 percent approval rate, the three-year contract offers substantial enhancements, including a notable pay increase, the introduction of TeamCare health insurance, and participation in the Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust, the largest of its kind in the U.S. For the first time, drivers will also have the ability to take sick days, a major improvement in their working conditions.

“These Teamsters bus drivers make Houston run safely and successfully,” stated Robert Mele, President of Local 988. The new agreement promises to uplift industry standards and significantly impact the drivers' lives and their families for years to come.

Towanda Jackson, a chief steward with Local 988, highlighted the continuous improvements achieved through their longstanding union representation, stating, “Securing top tier union insurance, sick days, and a pension plan that will allow us to retire with dignity is going to make a monumental difference in our lives.”

Teamsters Local 988, established in 1967, represents a diverse array of workers across various sectors in Houston and nearby regions. For additional information, visit teamster988.org.
