Significant Gains for Laundry Workers as Contracts with Alsco are Ratified
In a landmark development, Teamsters from 20 local unions have sanctioned two regional agreements with Alsco, enhancing the working conditions for approximately 300 laundry workers across seven states. These three-year contracts introduce a variety of benefits, including increased training and meeting pay, better company pension contributions, enhanced strike provisions, safeguards for TeamCare benefits, and increased weekly minimum commission guarantees.
"Laundry workers often go unrecognized, but they play a critical role in keeping businesses, hospitals, and industrial facilities running safely and efficiently," said Rocco Calo, Director of the Teamsters Industrial Trades Division. "The Teamsters have a long history of fighting for these essential workers, and these regional agreements deliver real improvements for our members across the South. We are proud of the progress made and will continue pushing for industry-leading contracts nationwide."
The Alsco Teamsters are integral to providing laundry and linen services for several sectors, including restaurants, health care, automotive, and industrial facilities, throughout the Southern Region.
Jim Sciancalepore, a shop steward with Teamsters Local 79 in Ft. Myers, Florida, shared his perspective on the new contract: "I’ve been an Alsco Teamster for 11 years, and this is the fourth contract I’m working under. Without a doubt, this contract will have the biggest financial gains for me and my co-workers. We were finally able to break through the company’s total control over creating better paying commission routes versus hourly routes, while keeping our great Teamsters pension and health insurance plans intact. Our Teamsters negotiators and leadership did a great job with this agreement."
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, established in 1903, stands as a formidable force, representing over 1.3 million dedicated workers in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.
